Project: Domestic Washing Machine Rinse Modelling

Client: Fisher and Paykel Appliances NZ

Date: 2008

Brief Description: My role in this project was the Principal Modelling Consultant and Project Engineer for the development of a mathematical model for the performance of rinse cycles in domestic washing machines.

Project: Peer Design Review of an Innovation Fund Project

Client: Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority NZ

Date: 2008

Brief Description: My role in this project was the Principal External Reviewer for a proposal to EECA for The Development of a Generic Design Methodology for the Delivery of Industrial Process Heat through the Integration of Solar-Boosted Waste Heat.

Project: Mangere Wastewater Secondary Treatment Plant Dissolved Oxygen Control

Clients: WaterCare Services Ltd and MWH NZ Ltd

Date: 2006

Brief Description: My role in this project was the Principal Control Consultant for MWH NZ Ltd. I conceived, developed and validated the advanced regulatory control scheme for the control of dissolved oxygen addition to the wastewater denitifrication reactors at Auckland’s Mangere wastewater treatment plant which has led to annual energy savings of at least $400,000 pa. MWH NZ Ltd received an Association of Consulting Engineers NZ Award of Merit in 2007, given in recognition for an outstanding project.  Received Engineers Australia John A. Brodie Medallist for the Best Paper in the discipline of Chemical Engineering presented at the Chemical Engineering Conference Australasia, CHEMECA 2008 for this project. Also received an Award for the Best Modelling Paper at the NZ Waste Water Association Conference, NZWWA 2008.

Project: Redwater Crude Condensate Blending Terminal Front End Engineering Design

Clients: Williams Energy and Provident Energy

Date: 2005

Brief Description: Lead Process Design Engineer for the development of a Design Basis Memorandum for the Front End Engineering Design for a Crude Condensate Blending Terminal. The overall scope of this project consisted of providing additional feed stream storage, a blending system, feed and product pumping, metering and sampling, above ground interconnecting piping, vapour collection system, rail car off-loading, finished product storage and tie-into a sales pipeline. The total design product rates were 41,000 BPD during winter operation and 46,000 BPD during summer operation.

Project: Assessment of the Petroleum Engineering Education Science Lectureship Initiative

Clients: University of Adelaide, University of Western Australia, Commonwealth Government of Australia

Date: 2005

Brief Description: An independent assessment of the outcomes achieved by the Science Lectureship Initiative (SLI) project on Petroleum Engineering Education at the University of Adelaide (UA) in collaboration with the University of Western Australia (UWA), Santos Ltd. and the State Government of South Australia.

Project: Saudi Aramco’s Hawiyah NGL Recovery Plant Depressuring Dynamic Simulation

Clients: Jacobs Engineering and Saudi Aramco

Date: 2004

Brief Description: An accurate, high fidelity dynamic model was developed of the plant consisting of Pre-cooling/Dehydration, NGL and Refrigeration Units. Major equipment design parameters, valve coefficients, actuator rates and variable downstream pressures were integral to the model. The effect of the large process piping holdups was also studied but was found not to be significant with respect to the modeled plant dynamics as liquid dynamics dominate. The proposed depressuring scheme was studied with the model. Scenarios involving depressuring the NGL and Refrigeration Units together and separately and also leaving the liquids in the process vessels were simulated. Case studies using liquid valves of different coefficients and also attempted flow and pressure control during depressuring were also performed.

Project: Redwater Fractionation Plant Simulation and Advanced Process Control

Clients: Williams Energy and Provident Energy

Date: 2003

Brief Description: Detailed dynamic simulation of the Redwater NGL fractionation plant (cavern feed plus deethanizer, depropanizer and debutanizer). Development and simulation of advanced regulatory control scheme involving flow and density feedforward control, internal reflux control, analyser feedback to reboiler heat duty control. Tuning of advanced control schemes on plant. Development of economic benefit trackers. Benefits identified of at least 0.5-2.5% incremental feed throughput, 1-2% increased production of higher value products, 5-10% reduced utility consumption, up to 80% fewer operator set-point changes and increased on-stream factors.

Project: Eco-efficiency Simulation Base-lining for Gas Processing

Clients: CETAC West, BP Canada and Nexen Canada

Date: 2003

Brief Description: Detailed simulation of two sour gas plants including inlet separation, stabilization, compression, sweetening, dehydration, refrigeration and NGL liquids recovery. Optimization of liquids recovery. Optimization of energy usage. Establishment of base-line values for energy intensity and eco-efficiency indicators.

Project: Bantry Fractionation Train Start-up Dynamic Simulation

Client: AltaGas

Date: 2002

Brief Description: Detailed dynamic simulation of the Bantry plant NGL fractionation train (feed plus deethanizer, depropanizer and debutanizer). Simulation of the cold start-up of the fractionation train and monitoring of the debutanizer reboiler liquid concentration. Confirmed validity of Bantry operations’ start-up procedures.

Project: West Stoddart Acid Gas Injection Facility Dynamic Simulation and Control

Client: Dominion Energy Canada

Date: 2002

Brief Description: Detailed dynamic simulation of the West Stoddart acid gas injection facilities (pipelines, block valves and line heater). Check out of proposed control system, start-up, normal and emergency operating and shut-down procedures. Re-design of the control system and control valve re-specification for safe and reliable operation. Successful start-up and operation of the facility ensued.

Project: Empress-Kerrobert NGL Pipeline Simulation, Control and Leak Detection

Client: BP Canada

Date: 2002

Brief Description: Detailed steady state and dynamic simulation of BP Canada’s Empress-Kerrobert NGL pipelines. Development of the density correlations for a new leak detection system. Old leak detection system replaced with improved system with less nuisance alarms. Improved control and operation of the pipelines resulted.

Project: Techno-economic Audit of Hydrogen from Electrolysis Process

Brief Description: Expert opinion on the technical novelty and economic potential of a water electrolysis process that produces an oxygen and hydrogen mixture.

Project: Kaybob South No.3 Sulfur Recovery Unit Simulation and Control

Client: Central Alberta Midstream/Chevron Canada Resources

Date: 2000

Brief Description: Detailed steady state and dynamic simulation of CAM’s Kaybob South No. 3 Gas Plant Sulfur Recovery Unit. Evaluation of three vendor-proposed control schemes for plant feed disturbances based on tail gas H2S concentration dynamics. Results enabled CAM the confidence to select a much less expensive tail gas clean up process. Form 99StdCV01
